Dirty Dancing
Why didn’t anyone tell me that Dirty Dancing was so much more than the lift at the end? I’ve just finished watching it and there are a couple of things I would like to note:
- The threshold when baby goes between her world and the other world - link this back to the Hero’s Journey and the crossing of the threshold
- The way baby goes back and forth between the worlds and how she is changed over time
- The idea of the window of summer where new things can happen - how the workers of the camp are ‘magical creatures’ who are forbidden to interact with the mortals - must be a lot of fantasy elements at play here
- The way baby becomes a woman
- The idea of lovers having to risk themselves for the other
- The idea of trust in relation to the lift
- Class warfare, the underclass literally ‘gets screwed’ by the overclass, the pregnant woman and patrick swayze himself, he felt used by the rich women
- The idea of the ‘bossman’, the ones who hold the power in the hotel, baby has to overcome her own heirarchy by standing up to ‘daddy’
- How they looked down upon her for asking her daddy for money but that was her acting agentically given what she had, she took a risk to get the $250
